Judge David Gertler (1911-1995)
The Gertler Law Firm credits its success to the vision, perseverance and drive of its founder, the late Judge David Gertler.
In 1920, at the age of nine, David Gertler and his family immigrated to the United States from Austria. When he arrived in America he spoke no English.
Despite that obstacle, he excelled at school, surpassed expectations, and skipped five grades. David Gertler proceeded to attend Tulane Law School, where he payed for his education through part-time jobs, one which included a job as a hat salesman.
David Gertler graduated law school with the highest honors and earned the prestigious Order of the Coif. In the 1960s, David Gertler served as a Judge in Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans.
In his sixties, after an unsuccessful bid for election as the Mayor of the City of New Orleans, David Gertler embarked upon yet another legal career. He and son Mike Gertler established their law firm and entered into private practice together.
In 1994, the son of Mike Gertler and grandson of David Gertler, Louis Gertler, joined the firm and added a third generation of the family to the firm. In 2010, another grandson of David Gertler, Josh Gertler, became a member of the firm.
