New Orleans Roundup Lawsuit Lawyers: Legal Help For A Death Caused By Roundup
Monsanto’s Roundup is one of the best-known lawn treatments on the market, and has been helping farmers, landscapers, and homeowners battle weeds since it hit the market in 1974.
Later, Monsanto began engineering so-called “Roundup Ready” food crops that were impervious to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup.
This allowed farmers and farm workers to directly spray Roundup on crops, raising concerns about whether there might be risks to exposure to the chemical.
Roundup is Found To Cause Cancer
In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) identified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen, meaning that its research had shown a link between exposure to glyphosate and cancer.
Monsanto, which is now owned by Bayer, has vigorously resisted calls for improved labels to warn users of the danger, and attempts at regulation have been stalled by the company’s lawsuits.
While a growing body of research suggests that glyphosate exposure – either from using Roundup or from eating “Roundup Ready” plants that have been sprayed with it – the company continues to insist that their product is absolutely safe. Just as with unsafe products like asbestos and tobacco, juries aren’t buying it anymore.
Roundup And Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
There have been two significant lawsuits where juries accepted a link between Roundup and a type of cancer called non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. In the first, a man who had worked as a groundskeeper filed suit after being diagnosed with the disease.
Monsanto’s legal team made the usual arguments about the unreliability of science and alleged that expert witnesses were biased, but, in the end, the jury awarded the man $289 million.
A second case pitted a couple in California against the pharmacy giant Bayer, which bought Monsanto in 2018 for $66 billion. The couple owned three properties and used Roundup for weed control approximately once a week at each property.
Over the decades, the pair are thought to have sprayed approximately 1,500 gallons of Roundup, which product labels and advertising claim is perfectly safe to humans.
Both developed non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. The jury in their case reached an eyepopping decision: it awarded the couple $2 billion in punitive damages, as well as $55 million in compensatory damages.
